Over the Mountain Guest Farm is located just 2kms off the R62, 35kms to George and 38kms to Oudtshoorn. Ideally suited for people in need of tranquility or relaxation around our swimming pool, the more active will find great bird watching, mountain biking, walking or hiking right on our door step. Quad biking, 4x4 trails and wine tours are but 10 minutes away.

Five historic buildings namely the "Police Station", "Post Office", "School", "House of Sin" and "Welsch House", date back to 1860 and once formed the heart of the bustling town of Herold. These historic buildings have been renovated into a delightful array of comfortable accommodation and a pub and dining area.

Over The Mountain Guest Farm is the ideal retreat away from the hustle and bustle of crowds, while being accessible from the major roads in the area. Oudtshoorn and George are both only half an hour's drive away. The Guesthouse complex, which dates from the early years of the 20th century, is situated in the once bustling town of Herold , at the upper end of the Montagu Pass (which has recently been declared a National Monument).

Herold is a small town tucked away at the end of the beautiful Montagu Pass near George. The construction of the Montagu Pass in 1847 put Herold on the map. The new pass was built to replace the old Craddock Pass , cutting the traveling time to George drastically. As a result of this the small town of Herold grew rapidly as travelers needed services and a place to stay. Herold continued to be busy into the 1950's. But due to the opening of the Outeniqua Pass in 1958 this small town's fortunes changed - traffic through the Montagu pass diminished and by the early 1960's Herold had become almost a ghost town. It remained a small farming community that continued their fruit farming activities during the 1970's & 80's until the 1981 Laingsburg floods. These devastating floods destroyed nearly 17000 trees, creating the need for an alternative crop. The climate of the area provided an answer - a crop not usually associated with South Africa - hops.

Recently there has once again been a revival in the town. Many of the original buildings including the Post Office, the Police Station and the House of Sin, have been renovated and restored. They now provide accommodation, a pub and dining area and make an unusual place to stay while you explore the other aspects of this interesting and unique town.
